ADVANCED WIRELESS COMMUNICATION

PREREQUISITE: DIGITAL COMMUNICATION 
OBJECTIVES:
  • To understand the importance of improving capacity of wireless channel using MIMO
  • To enable understanding of channel impairment mitigation using space-time block and Trellis codes
  • To teach advanced MIMO system like layered space time codes, MU-MIMO System and MIMO OFDM systems


Unit I: WIRELESS CHANNEL PROPAGATION AND MODEL

  2. Reflection, diffraction and Scattering
  3. Free space & two ray
  4. Small scale fading
  5. Channel classification 
  6. Channel models – COST -231 Hata model, Longley-Rice Model, 
  7. NLOS Multipath Fading Models: Rayleigh, Rician, Nakagami, 
  8. Composite Fading, shadowing Distributions
  9. Link power budget Analysis
Unit II: CAPACITY OF WIRELESS CHANNELS

  1. Capacity in AWGN
  2. Capacity of flat fading channel
  3. Capacity of frequency selective fading channels
Unit III: Diversity

  1. Realization of independent fading paths
  2. Receiver Diversity: Selection combining
  3. Threshold Combining
  4. Maximum-ratio Combining
  5. Equal Gain Combining
  6. Transmitter Diversity: Channel known at transmitter
  7. Channel unknown at the transmitter.


Unit IV: MIMO COMMUNICATIONS
  1. Narrowband MIMO model
  2. Parallel decomposition of the MIMO channel
  3. MIMO channel capacity
  4. MIMO Diversity Gain: Beam forming
  5. Diversity-Multiplexing trade-offs
  6. Space time Modulation and coding: STBC, STTC
